Best Family-Friendly Campsites

Bringing kids to North Maine Woods? These campsites offer the best combination of easy vehicle access, full amenities (fire rings, tables, privies), calm water, and shorter drives from checkpoints. NMW and AWW are first-come, first-served (KI Jo-Mary accepts reservations) — arrive by early afternoon on weekends to secure a site.

1

Frost Pond

Telos Region

Easy vehicle access from the Telos checkpoint, authorized campsite with fire rings, picnic tables, and privies. Calm pond water safe for wading. Short drive on maintained logging road makes it accessible even with a loaded family vehicle.

2

Chesuncook Lake (Gero Island)

Ragmuff/Seboomook Region

Spacious sites with sandy shoreline areas for kids to play. Vehicle accessible via the Golden Road from Millinocket. The large lake offers swimming, paddling, and fishing all from camp. Nearby Chesuncook Village adds a historical element kids enjoy.

3

Long Pond

KI Jo-Mary

One of the easiest-to-reach campsites in the KI Jo-Mary system with full authorized amenities. The pond is calm and sheltered — ideal for kids learning to paddle. Close to the checkpoint means less time on rough roads with antsy passengers.

4

Johnston Pond

KI Jo-Mary

Easy access from the KI checkpoint with established sites and good amenities. The pond is small enough that kids can explore the full shoreline by canoe. Nearby trails to Gulf Hagas provide a day-trip adventure for older children.

5

Seboomook Lake

Ragmuff/Seboomook Region

Large lakefront sites with room to spread out. The Seboomook checkpoint provides a short drive to camp. Excellent moose viewing at dawn and dusk — kids love counting moose. The lake is large enough for open-water paddling but has calm coves for young paddlers.

6

Telos Lake

Telos Region

Close to the Telos checkpoint with maintained access roads. Authorized sites with full amenities mean no permit hassles. The lake offers swimming, fishing, and paddling. The historic Telos Dam is an interesting landmark for curious kids.

7

East Branch Pleasant River

KI Jo-Mary

River-side camping with gentle current sections where kids can wade safely. Well-maintained sites with easy vehicle access. The river corridor provides natural entertainment — skipping stones, building dams, and watching wildlife.

8

Little Jo-Mary Lake

KI Jo-Mary

A smaller, sheltered lake that feels manageable for families with young children. Full amenities at authorized sites. The calm water and relatively short drive from the checkpoint make this a stress-free family camping destination.
