Do I need a reservation to camp in North Maine Woods?

Accepted Answer

NMW and AWW campsites are first-come, first-served — no reservations. KI Jo-Mary is different: campsite reservations are accepted by calling a checkpoint directly. Jo Mary: (207) 723-8944, Hedgehog: (207) 358-4520, Katahdin Ironworks: (207) 965-8135. For NMW, just arrive at the checkpoint, pay your fees, and find an open campsite.

Is there cell phone service in North Maine Woods?

Accepted Answer

Virtually none. There is no reliable cell coverage from any carrier in most of the North Maine Woods region. Download offline maps and GPS files before your trip. A satellite communicator (Garmin inReach, SPOT) is recommended for emergencies.

How do I pay the fees?

Accepted Answer

Fees are paid at the checkpoint when you enter. Staffed checkpoints accept cash, checks, and credit cards. Electronic/unmanned gates accept cash and checks only. Fees are per-person, per-day and vary by zone (NMW, KI Jo-Mary, AWW) and residency status.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are allowed in all three zones — NMW, KI Jo-Mary, and AWW. Pets must be kept under control at all times and must not be left unattended (AWW Rule 2.21). Keep dogs leashed at campsites, bring bags for waste cleanup, and be aware of wildlife encounters and ticks. Contact NMW at (207) 435-6213 for specific pet policy questions.

Are ATVs allowed?

Accepted Answer

No. ATVs, motorcycles, bicycles, and horses are prohibited at all times in North Maine Woods and KI Jo-Mary — no exceptions. This policy exists for logging road safety and forest fire prevention. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway also prohibits ATVs. Snowmobiles are allowed in winter on designated ITS trails. What is the difference between the three management zones?

North Maine Woods (NMW) is the largest zone with 211 campsites across 6 regions, managed by NMW Inc. KI Jo-Mary Forest has 62 campsites and includes Gulf Hagas. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW) is a state-managed, water-access-only corridor with 84 campsites along 92 miles of river.

Do I need a fire permit?

Accepted Answer

At authorized campsites with built fire rings, no additional permit is needed. At "fire permit" campsites (no built amenities), you need a free campfire permit from the Maine Forest Service. Call the Northern Region office at (207) 435-7963 (M–F, 8 AM–4 PM) 1–2 days before your trip. Permits cannot be obtained online. During high fire danger periods, all open fires may be banned.

What kind of vehicle do I need?

Most main roads are passable in a regular car during dry summer conditions, but an SUV or truck with good ground clearance is recommended. Many campsite access roads are rougher. Always carry a spare tire. There are no gas stations inside the woods.

Most staffed checkpoints are open from approximately 6 AM to 9 PM during the main season (May–November). Some checkpoints have electronic gates for after-hours access. Winter access is very limited. Check specific checkpoint hours on our Checkpoints page.

Is there drinking water at the campsites?

Accepted Answer

No. There is no treated drinking water at any campsite. You must bring your own water or treat water from lakes and streams using a filter, purification tablets, or boiling. Giardia is present in virtually all surface water.

Can I have a campfire?

At authorized campsites with fire rings, yes. At fire permit sites, only with a valid Maine Forest Service campfire permit — call (207) 435-7963 to request one 1–2 days ahead. During dry periods, fire bans may be in effect for all areas. Always fully extinguish fires before leaving.

Can I hunt in North Maine Woods?

Yes. Hunting is one of the primary recreational activities in NMW. Moose, deer, bear, and upland birds (grouse, woodcock) are all available. Maine moose permits are issued through an annual lottery. Apply by May through MDIFW (Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife). About 3,000 permits are issued from 50,000+ applicants. Permits cost $52 for residents and $585 for non-residents. The season runs from late September through late October.

Is North Maine Woods open in winter?

Access is very limited in winter. Most checkpoints are closed and roads are unplowed. Snowmobile access is available via the ITS (Interconnected Trail System) trail network. Some winter checkpoints may be open for snowmobile access. Ice fishing is popular on frozen lakes. Winter camping requires serious cold-weather gear and experience.

Can I hike the Appalachian Trail through NMW?

The Appalachian Trail passes through KI Jo-Mary Forest (not NMW proper) as part of the 100-Mile Wilderness section between Monson and Baxter State Park. AT hikers pay KI Jo-Mary camping fees at designated AT campsites. Gulf Hagas, a popular side trip, is also in KI Jo-Mary.

Are dogs allowed in all zones?

Dogs are allowed in all three zones. In NMW and KI Jo-Mary, keep dogs under control at all times. In the AWW, pets must be under the owner's control and not left unattended (Rule 2.21). Clean up pet waste at campsites, trails, and parking areas. Be aware that dogs can attract wildlife and pick up ticks in remote areas.

Most NMW campsites are designed for 1–2 parties (typically up to 8–10 people). For larger groups, you may need to spread across adjacent sites. There is no formal group reservation system. Do I need a guide for hunting or fishing?

A guide is not legally required for hunting or fishing in NMW (except for non-resident bear hunters using bait or dogs, who must use a Maine Registered Guide). However, a guide is highly recommended for moose hunting first-timers and for anyone unfamiliar with the area. Guides provide local knowledge, equipment, and can help with logistics like field dressing and hauling.

North Maine Woods is accessible via logging roads from several gateway towns. From Portland, it's about 4 hours; from Bangor, 2 hours; from Boston, 5.5 hours. Enter through one of the 22 staffed or electronic checkpoints — choose based on your destination region.

Are there bears in North Maine Woods?

Yes. Black bears are common throughout North Maine Woods. Store food in your vehicle or hang it from a tree at least 10 feet up and 4 feet from the trunk. Never leave food, coolers, or trash at your campsite unattended. Bears are generally shy and avoid humans, but a fed bear is a dangerous bear. If you encounter one, make noise, back away slowly, and never run.

Blackflies peak from late May through late June and are the worst pest in the North Woods. Mosquitoes are active June through August. Deerflies are common in July. By mid-August, bugs are significantly reduced. September and October are nearly bug-free. Bring DEET or picaridin repellent, a head net, and consider a Thermacell device.

Can I bring an RV to North Maine Woods?

Small RVs and camper trailers can access some NMW and KI Jo-Mary campsites, but roads are rough gravel with potholes and washboard. Is North Maine Woods the same as Baxter State Park?

No. North Maine Woods and Baxter State Park are separate areas with different management, rules, and fees. Baxter is a state park with reservations, designated trails, and Katahdin. NMW is privately owned commercial forestland with first-come-first-served camping, logging roads, and a very different wilderness character. KI Jo-Mary Forest sits between them. Many visitors combine both areas on one trip.

There are no gas stations inside North Maine Woods. Fill up completely before entering. The last fuel stops are Millinocket (south/Golden Road entrance), Greenville (southwest/Lily Bay Road), Ashland (east entrance), and Jackman (west entrance). Carry extra fuel if you plan to drive deep into the woods — some destinations require 60+ miles of logging roads one-way.

Yes. There is no potable water at any campsite in North Maine Woods, KI Jo-Mary, or the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Bring all the water you need or treat water from lakes and streams using a water filter (Sawyer Squeeze recommended), purification tablets, or boiling for at least one minute. Giardia and other waterborne pathogens are present in virtually all surface water.

What should I do if I see a moose on the road?

Accepted Answer

Stop your vehicle immediately and give the moose plenty of space. Never honk, flash lights, or try to go around a moose — they are unpredictable and can charge. Keep at least 50 feet away for photos. Moose are most active at dawn and dusk. Drive under 45 mph on logging roads, especially May through October. A collision with a 1,000+ pound moose is often fatal.

If you arrive after checkpoint hours, there is a $20/vehicle after-hours passage fee. A phone at the checkpoint allows you to call in your registration, and you leave payment in an envelope at the gate. Some gates are electronic and allow 24-hour access with self-service payment. Plan to arrive during staffed hours (typically 6 AM – 9 PM) when possible to avoid the extra fee.

Do I need a satellite communicator?

Strongly recommended but not legally required. With no cell service in most of NMW, a satellite communicator with SOS capability is your only way to call for help in an emergency. The Garmin inReach Mini 2 (~$300) is the most popular choice among NMW visitors, offering two-way messaging and SOS. Even a basic SPOT Gen4 (~$150) provides one-way SOS. The cost is minimal compared to the safety it provides.

CB Channel 19 is the standard frequency for logging truck communication in NMW. Truckers announce their position at road junctions (e.g., "loaded truck at mile 42"). A portable CB radio ($30–$60) lets you hear approaching trucks around blind corners on logging roads — it's one of the best safety tools you can carry. Can I bring my dog to Baxter State Park?

Baxter State Park is within the broader North Maine Woods region but independently managed by the BSP Authority (not NMW, Inc.). Is Baxter State Park a Maine state park?

No. Despite common assumption, Baxter State Park is independently governed by the Baxter State Park Authority, not the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands. It was donated by former Governor Percival Baxter with a "forever wild" mandate. This is why BSP has different rules, fees, and management from Maine state parks.

Can I drive an RV into Baxter State Park?

No. Vehicles are limited to 22 feet in length and 9 feet in height. No RVs, large camper trailers, motorcycles, ATVs, or e-bikes are permitted. The park road is narrow and unpaved in sections.

How hard is it to climb Katahdin?

Very strenuous. Katahdin (5,267 ft) is a serious mountain requiring 8-12 hours round trip. All routes involve above-treeline exposure with rocky, exposed terrain. The Hunt Trail (AT) gains 4,188 ft over 5.2 miles. The Knife Edge is extremely exposed with 1,000+ ft drops. Weather can change rapidly. BSP rangers may close trails in poor conditions. Come prepared with layers, rain gear, food, water, and a headlamp.
