Best Fall Camping Spots in North Maine Woods

Fall is arguably the best season to camp in North Maine Woods. The bugs are gone, the crowds thin out, and Aroostook County consistently reaches peak foliage before anywhere else in Maine — typically the last week of September in the north, first two weeks of October further south. Cool days (40–60°F), cold nights (20–40°F), and golden light make autumn camping magical.

1

Deboullie Mountain Area

Ashland Region

Climb the Deboullie fire tower for a 360-degree foliage panorama. Aroostook County peaks first in Maine — typically the last week of September. The surrounding ponds provide mirror-like reflections of fall color. Brook trout fishing remains excellent through October.

2

Caucomgomoc Lake

Caucomgomoc Region

Western-facing lakefront sites catch sunset through peak color canopy. The large lake creates dramatic reflections of red and gold maples. Moose are especially active during the fall rut (September), making dawn lakeside viewing exceptional.

3

First Musquacook Lake

Allagash Region

Spacious waterfront sites surrounded by mixed hardwood-softwood forest that produces outstanding fall color. The northern location means earlier peak foliage than southern Maine. October weekdays here offer near-total solitude with full autumn color.

4

Gulf Hagas (KI Jo-Mary)

KI Jo-Mary

The "Grand Canyon of Maine" is spectacular in fall when the gorge walls are framed by blazing maples. Camp at nearby KI Jo-Mary sites and day-hike the rim trail. Peak color typically arrives in early October. Combine with Appalachian Trail section hiking.

5

Chesuncook Lake

Ragmuff/Seboomook Region

On clear fall days, Katahdin is visible across Chesuncook Lake — New England's highest peak backed by blue sky above and fall color below. The historic village adds atmosphere. Landlocked salmon fishing peaks in fall when surface temperatures drop.

6

Chamberlain Lake

Telos Region

Historic Chamberlain Lake is ringed by mixed forest that lights up in early October. The long lake creates sweeping panoramic views of unbroken fall color. Combine with a visit to the restored Chamberlain Farm logging camp site.

7

Allagash Mountain Campsites

Allagash Region

Camp near the base of Allagash Mountain and climb to the summit fire tower for one of the most expansive foliage views in northern Maine. On clear days, the tower offers views into Canada. The surrounding Allagash region peaks in late September.

8

Seboomook Lake

Ragmuff/Seboomook Region

The west shore of Seboomook Lake catches afternoon light through peak color from late September into early October. Moose sightings spike during the fall rut. The Seboomook checkpoint provides access from Greenville with a scenic drive through foliage.
